The Importance of Education:
Scholar and Spiritual
D&C88:118 seek learning, even by study and also by faith.
When I hear the word EDUCATION, instantly the words knowledge and learning come to mind. It is important that we obtain an education not only in school, but spiritually as well. Why is it important that we obtain a formal education? Dallin H Oaks and his wife Kristen wrote in the 2009 Liahona,
“In our educational choices we should prepare to support ourselves and those who may become dependent upon us. It is necessary that we have marketable skills. Education is mandatory to personal security and well-being.”
I have seen first hand the blessings that can come from obtaining an education. My mom is a Registered Nurse, while I was attending high school she was attending college. Not only has her education helped in providing for our family but it helped me in a time of need. As many of you know feb. of this year I was hospitalized for a month. After 4 days of being hospitalized I had major surgery, my recovery was a slow and painful process. I had become severely ill after my surgery, there were several complications. At which one point I couldn’t bare sunlight or movement of any kind. My doctors had expressed they did not know what was wrong with me, they could not figure it out. At this time my mom was working 2 jobs. She tried to be there as much as possible, but me being alone, and in so much pain, was a constant worry for her. Luckily I come from a family of nurses. My aunt Terri offered to drop her busy life and stay with me in the hospital. Together my mom and Terri made sure I received the best care, because of their knowledge as RNs they were able to recognize signs, ask the right questions, and at one point help the doctor’s figure out the reason for my pain. Which ultimately lead to me going home. I was blessed immensely because of their educations. At 22 yrs old Im still trying to figure out what my “educational pursuit” is. I hope that I will be able to find the best path for myself. I pray often and attend the temple in search of that answer. I also ask my parents for their prayers and advice. I know the Lord is leading me to the education that will give me a career in which I can be a servant of him and someday a wife and mother. I do not know the things I will face in this life but I know by obtaining an education I will be prepared to handle whatever challenges I may face.
Why is it important we gain a spiritual education?
President Brigham Young once stated “[Our] religion … prompts [us] to search diligently after knowledge,” “There is no other people in existence more eager to see, hear, learn and understand truth.”
In this gospel we are constantly learning. We learn “line upon line, precept upon precept.” Heavenly Father knows each of us, and he knows what we need to learn and know. Through scripture study, prayer, church attendance, callings we hold, religious classes, others testimonies, priesthood blessings, trials we face and even by the examples of those around us we gain a spiritual education. President Eyring said in 2009 New Era in an article title Real-Life Education “The Lord knows both what He will need you to do and what you will need to know to do it. You can with confidence expect that He has prepared opportunities for you to learn.”
Throughout my experience in the hospital, Heavenly Father taught me several things. I learned patience, endurance, and what it feels like to have to completely rely on others. I learned what it means to truly serve someone, and to be humble enough to let someone serve you. I learned the love that can be felt as service is rendered. I am blessed to have many wonderful, loving people in my life who were there for me in my time of need. But one person sticks out to me the most. As I lied in that hospital bed day after day barely able to move, it was an immense blessing to have my aunt there in place of my mom. Someone I could trust who would take care of me. She went above and beyond. She treated me like her own child. She encouraged me, even when I wanted to give up. She made sure I had cute, but comfortable clothes to wear ( I didn’t want to wear that awful hospital gown) She made sure I had cute socks on my feet while I walked the halls trying to regain my strength. She made sure I was able to have my hair done, and clean.(those who know me…makeup/hair don’t are impor.) She watched carefully as each staff member attended to me. She made sure they let me sleep. She massaged my feet to help ease the pain in them. She made sure I had everything I could possibly need and more. It was all the little things she did that made a huge difference to me. She taught me what it means to be in service of someone. I had to completely rely on her for everything. She never complained, she always had a smile for me, she reassured me everything would be ok. I have never felt so much love from someone in my time of need. I could see the love she had for me in her eyes. I loved her more then and now then I had ever before.
I will never forget those feelings and what the Lord taught me throughout that trial.
By gaining both a formal and a spiritual education, we are preparing ourselves for the eternities. We will only take what we have learned in this life with us to the next. I encourage each of you to gain a formal education. I ask you to search diligently to find what the Lord wants you to do with your life. Seek daily to learn from the spirit, and to grow in this gospel. We have much to learn. I promise as we open our hearts to the Lord we will learn all that we need to.
